TOKYO ( 東京都 )
JAPAN
Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1600s. The city was originally a small fishing village named Edo and became the center of the country's politics and culture in the 17th century, when Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, made it his seat of power. During the Edo period, Tokyo experienced significant growth and became one of the largest cities in the world. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, when the shogunate was overthrown, Tokyo was officially renamed the Imperial capital and underwent modernization and westernization. During World War II, much of the city was destroyed by air raids, but it was quickly rebuilt after the war. Today, Tokyo is one of the world's leading cities, with a thriving economy and a rich cultural heritage. It is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 13 million people, and is known for its high-tech infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and unique blend of modernity and tradition. It is also a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year with its unique blend of ancient and modern attractions, delicious cuisine, and exciting nightlife.
Visiting Tokyo has been on my travel list since I was a kid. I was fascinated by the manga and anime movies about robotics and future city. When I am in Tokyo, I am a kid again... I am fascinated by many things that I might not be able to see daily. So much to see, so much to experience. Pico Iyer, a novelist, once said, "Tokyo is not a city; it's a world, a universe of its own, full of contrasts and contradictions that somehow come together to make a strange and beautiful whole." Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
